Free Web Templates - open source or restrictive licences?

I have contributed to a discussion in an online forum about so called “free templates” that require a link-back to the author to be maintained in the template.

My opinion is that these templates are not free in that there is a cost associated with them for any webmaster that chooses to commit to using them for a site.

My thoughts are still developing on this but I have never favoured being restricted in my use of a free resource and surely maintaining a link in a free template is a form of payment?

Anyway, here are some great resources for free templates, some more free than others are:

Open Source Web Design - Well established Open Source Templates site - seems not to be updated lately.
Open Web Design - Another community driven free templates site.
Free Site Templates - Still has templates online from the old “Jim World” days.
Free Web Templates - Free web templates available as well as premium templates (paid).
Free HTML Web Templates from Gordon Mac - free templates for personal or business use.
Artist for hire free web templates - Free templates but restrictions on distribution.
Free Class Web Templates - an educational resource for free web templates.
David Pye Free Templates and Graphics - Does what is says on the tin.
Free Templates - a mix of free and premium (paid) templates here.
27 Stars Free Web Graphics - mix of free and paid templates.
Pagekits Free Templates - Scroll down the page to see the free templates.
Web Diner Free Templates - Require a link back on these “free” templates.
Steves Free Templates - mix of free and paid templates offered by Steve.

As ever, check the license arrangements at these sites before you use the templates, lots are totally free with no restrictions on use - some have restrictions and/or require a link to be maintained.

Have fun! :-)
