Portobello Road Street Sign, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (Public Domain Photograph)

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

This is a photograph I took today (24th October 2007) of the Portobello Road street sign.

Might be useful for some of you visitors to London who forgot to take your camera on your day out, maybe? :-)

This sign is at the bottom end of Portobello Road, near to Notting Hill Station, and just opposite the Sun in Splendour public house. (A good local British pub – I’ve had a pint in there).

Portobello Road is a world famous market to the west of London full of antique shops and (increasingly) souvenir shops.

Lots of good restaurants and bars too – check out the Mau Mau Bar at the top end of the street (furthest from Notting Hill) – I enjoyed a glass of wine there and some good jazz one night recently.

I place this Carbuncle’s Blog photograph of the Portobello Road street sign, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London in the public domain, as far as I am able, and allow any use including commercial.

Portobello Road is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea – why is it a Royal Borough? Because Queen Victoria was born in Kensington and Queen Victoria bestowed Royal Borough status to honour her birthplace.

So, anyone need a street sign photographed?

Harley Davidson Motorbike Notting Hill, London (Public Domain Photograph)

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Here’s a photograph that I took of a Harley Davidson motor-cycle outside a shop in Pembridge Road, Notting Hill, London.

The Harley Davidson was sitting up on the pavement outside a curio shop, looking very, very smart – the bike not the shop – the shop just looked businesslike…. :-)

The Harley-Davidson Motor Company is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. It was founded in America in the very early 1900s… either 1901 or 1903, depending on which authority you accept. The Harley-Davidson Motor Company is now quoted on the New York Stock Exchange.

Many years ago I read a cracking science fiction novel by Roger Zelazny called “Damnation Alley” whose main character was a Hell’s Angel. A Harley-Davidson motorbike was his preferred mode of transport. I can recommend this science-fiction book if you find it in a second-hand bookshop book – a good read.

Herb Garden Windowbox in Notting Hill, London (Public Domain Photograph)

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

I took a photograph of this little windowbox with herbs in a mews in Notting Hill, London.

The windowbox was sitting on a little wooden table at the front of the mews house.

A mews house, in London, is a conversion from a stable building that once housed horses and servants. There are lots of them around the Central London area, and a row of mews houses can look very picturesque indeed.
